Abrogate le norme contro gli invalidi civili
striscione dell'Aipd

Ireland celebrated World Down Syndrome Day 2010 on Wednesday the 24th of March. This year, Down Syndrome Ireland asked political parties, if they could afford to continue to ignore over seven thousand people with Down Syndrome and their families?

As regular users of public transport, health services and education services, people with Down syndrome are affected by political decisions in the same way as everybody else.

People with Down syndrome have the legal right to vote and are entitled to participate in the political process. Yet, when it comes to democratic rights, the overwhelming majority of adults with Down syndrome still find themselves largely excluded from the process due to the complexity of the system and a low awareness among politicians of their right to vote.

Picture of David O’ Brien from Glasnevin, Co. Dublin who was elected National Chairperson of the Advisory Council.

Down Syndrome Ireland is pleased to announce the formation of its first adult sub-committee to represent the opinions of adults with Down syndrome within our organisation.  The National Advisory Council is made up of thirteen adults with Down syndrome from across Ireland.

Committee members are recent graduates of the ‘My Opinion, My Vote’ (MOTE) education programme.  The MOTE education programme enabled these adults with Down syndrome to become better engaged the world around them by learning about voting, demanding recognition of their rights and campaigning on the issues that are important to them.
